Limerick Philosophical Society
LIMERICK PHILOSOPHICAL SOCIETY

History and Background

In 1984 forty six mature students received Diplomas in Philosophy at the conferring ceremonies in Mary Immaculate College in Limerick. A core group of these diplomates founded the Limerick Philosophical Society in September 1984. The Society holds six meetings at the College between October and May, generally on the last Thursday of each month. Admission is free and all are welcome. Average attendance at meetings has been 30; on one occasion there was an attendance of 66. Papers are presented by members of the Society or by invited guest speakers.

Objectives of the Society

To promote an interest in philosophy in the general public; to question and examine presuppositions implicit in everyday life.

The broad aim of the Society is to promote the study of philosophy in all its branches: logic, metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, aesthetics, social and political philosophy, and the philosophies of religion, science, history, language, mind, and education.

Involvement in the Society is open to all, and is in no way limited to those with special qualifications in philosophy.
